There are a variety of movie reboots releasing soon and in development, and here's every one of them and when they will arrive in theaters.

The film industry continues riding the wave of reboots, and there are already a variety of movie reboots either releasing soon or in development. The entertainment industry is defined by trends, and one that has been dominating the big screen is reboots. Through it, different franchises have been brought back to life, particularly in the horror genre, and in many cases it has been mixed with sequels, making way for what’s now known as a “requel”. Surely, not all reboots have been successful, but that hasn’t stopped the film industry from producing more and more from different genres.

Some successful reboots in recent years across different genres are the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy, Warner Bros.’ The Batman, David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, and Scream (2022), along with its sequels. Reboots have not only been used to bring franchises and universes back to life but also to expand on the stories of their main characters and introduce a new generation of protagonists, so there’s a lot of room for creativity. It’s not surprising, then, that there are various movie reboots coming in the near future, and here’s every reboot confirmed to happen.

Saw X is a horror movie directed by Kevin Greutert, and it’s the tenth installment in the Saw film series. Saw X arrives only two years after the release of Spiral (which had a completely different villain) and six years after Jigsaw, but it isn’t a continuation of either of these. Instead, Saw X is injecting new life into the franchise by going back to the time between Saw and Saw II, following a sick and desperate John Kramer (Tobin Bell) as he travels to México for an experimental and risky procedure that could cure him – however, he still manages to continue his work.

The Exorcist: Believer is directed by David Gordon Green and is the sixth installment in The Exorcist franchise, but it serves as a direct sequel to William Friedkin's 1973 horror classic. The Exorcist: Believer follows the parents of demonically possessed girls who, desperate for help, find what they need in someone who had a similar experience: Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn). The Exorcist: Believer’s new cast is formed by Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Jennifer Nettles, and Norbert Leo Butz, and the movie already has a sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, set for an April 18, 2025, release.

Wonka is a musical fantasy movie directed by Paul King, which serves as a prequel to the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Wonka follows a young Willy Wonka (Timothée Chalamet) and how became the world’s best and most eccentric chocolatier, as well as how he met the Oompa-Loompas. Wonka doesn’t hold a connection to Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, instead being linked to the 1971 version starring Gene Wilder, and it’s to be seen if it will make way for more stories about a young Willy Wonka.

Red Sonja is a sword and sorcery movie directed by M.J. Bassett and based on the comic books of the same name. Plot details about the new adaptation of Red Sonja are still unknown, but the title character will be played by Matilda Lutz, with Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, and Michael Bisping also joining the cast. Red Sonja is expected to be released in the first or second quarter of 2024, and attendees at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con event had the chance to watch the first teaser trailer as part of the celebration of the character’s 50th anniversary.

The more the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands, the more chances it has to introduce new characters and give new life to those who got big screen adaptations in the past. Falling into the latter category is Blade, the dhampir who was played by Wesley Snipes in the Blade trilogy in the late 1990s/early 2000s. The MCU’s Blade will be played by Mahershala Ali, and the movie is scheduled as part of Phase 5, meaning Blade could join the crossover events Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars at the end of Phase 6.

Another reboot in the MCU is Fantastic Four. After a horrible reboot in 2005, which is now regarded as one of the worst superhero movies ever made, the Fantastic Four are now getting a new chance, this time as part of the MCU. Fantastic Four will kick off the MCU’s Phase 6, the closing chapter in the Multiverse Saga, and while it’s expected to start filming in January 2024, Marvel hasn’t announced the cast yet, and plot details haven’t been revealed, either.

The DC Universe is going through a massive restructuring that includes a couple of reboots, among them Superman: Legacy. The new Superman movie won’t see the return of Henry Cavill as the man of steel, and instead, it will focus on a younger version of Superman and his time as a reporter, while also going on a personal journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human family. David Corenswet has been cast as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern.

Another reboot from the DC Universe is The Brave and the Bold. This project will explore members of the Bat-Family and will introduce Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, as a version of Robin, being a “father and son story” about Batman and Robin. The Brave and the Bold won’t have Ben Affleck back as the Caped Crusader and Robert Pattinson’s Batman will live in his own universe, so it will see a new Bruce Wayne. With no projected release date yet, no cast and plot details have been revealed yet.

After the release of Final Destination 5 in 2011, a sixth movie is now in development to reboot the franchise. Titled Final Destination 6: Bloodlines, the project was announced in 2019 and in 2020, producer Craig Perry shared they were considering focusing on first responders in this new story (via Flickering Myth). Final Destination 6 was planned to start shooting in the summer of 2023, but will now begin filming once the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike comes to an end.

The Chronicles of Narnia is coming back to life after the trilogy came to an end in 2010. The reboot of The Chronicles of Narnia will have its home on Netflix, and in July 2023, it was announced that Greta Gerwig will write and direct at least two Narnia films for the streaming giant. At the time of writing, there’s no projected release date for the Narnia reboot.

Cliffhanger is a 1993 action thriller movie directed by Renny Harlin and starring Sylvester Stallone as a mountain climber who gets entangled in a heist of a U.S. Treasury plane flying through the Rocky Mountains. In May 2023, a reboot/legacy sequel was announced, with Ric Roman Waugh serving as director and Stallone reprising his role alongside a new generation of characters. There’s no projected release date yet for the Cliffhanger reboot.

The Naked Gun is a media franchise of crime spoof-comedies, with its last film released in 1994. A reboot of The Naked Gun was announced in 2013, but it has gone through various changes during its development phase. In 2021, Seth MacFarlane was hired to develop the project, and the following year, Liam Neeson was announced to star as Frank Drebin Jr. The Naked Gun was planned to start shooting in the summer of 2023, but with the ongoing strikes, it’s unknown when it will start filming.
